About the Role - 

We are seeking a Sr. Analyst, Tax Technology (Analytics and Special Projects) to join our Global Tax Technology team. This is an important role that will primarily focus on analytics and special projects, while also helping support our tax compliance and controversy data requests. About the Team -
The Tax Team at Instacart is instrumental in optimizing the company's tax strategy by reducing overall tax expenses through effective planning, while ensuring compliance with all Corporate Income Tax and Sales and Use Tax regulations. The team is comprised of specialized units: Tax Technology, Indirect Tax, Direct Tax, and Tax Project Management Office (PMO). Together, they collaborate extensively with departments such as Finance, Legal, Policy, Product, Engineering, and Business Development to ensure a robust and comprehensive approach to tax planning and compliance.

 

The Tax Technology Team enhances these efforts by developing and implementing sophisticated solutions for data integration, transformation, process efficiency, and analytics, playing a vital role in mitigating tax liability and compliance risks. By providing advanced data access and analytical tools, they empower the Tax Department to focus on high-level technical tax challenges.

 

About the Job 

  • Responsible for assisting the tax team with a variety of data projects including projects around machine learning and tax analytics
  • Responsible for assisting with new products and initiatives from a tax technology perspective and working with the tax PMO team
  • Responsible for providing data-driven analysis and insights in support of tax calculations, forecasting, and tax planning utilizing analytics tools (Alteryx, SQL, Tableau, PowerBi, etc)
  • Responsible for the development, support, and execution of end-to-end projects including configurations, documentation, and testing
  • Responsible for tracking project due dates and deadlines
  • Responsible for identifying and championing use cases for streamlining processes in an effort to increase efficiencies
  • Responsible for reviewing inquiries from stakeholders, evaluating the impact, and using problem solving skills to identify and propose solutions

About You

Minimum Qualifications

Overview of the Data Engineering team: 

At Zego the Data Engineering team is integral to our data platform, working closely with Software Engineers, Data Scientists and Data Analysts along with other areas of the business. We use a variety of internal and external tooling to maintain our data repositories. Over the next 12 months you will:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining our ETL and ELT pipelines.

About you

We are looking for somebody with a working knowledge of building data pipelines and the underlying infrastructure. Practical knowledge of (or strong desire to learn) the following or similar technologies:

  • Python
  • Airflow
  • Databases (PostgreSQL)
  • Data Warehousing (Redshift / Snowflake)
  • SQL (We use DBT for modelling data in the warehouse)
  • Data Architecture including Dimensional Modelling
  • Experience in using infrastructure as code tools (e.g. Terraform)

We are looking for economists and machine learning engineers to join our fast-moving team. The Economics team at Instacart works on a range of interesting and challenging problems, from aligning the incentives in our multi-sided marketplace to analyzing the role of prices and product placement in our customers' decision-making.

ABOUT THE ROLE

 

The ideal candidate for this role will bring a combination of experience in both economics and machine learning. This might be a recent economics PhD graduate with relevant research experience, typically in  computationally intensive empirical topics, as well as some exposure to machine learning coursework and applications. We are also interested in candidates with industry experience in the creation, deployment, and maintenance of machine learning models at scale, especially if they have some background or experience in economics or an economics-adjacent field. More senior candidates are also welcome to apply.

The Economics team at Instacart works on a range of interesting and challenging problems, from aligning the incentives in our multi-sided marketplace to analyzing the role of prices and product placement in our customers' decision-making. Some of the core areas of focus for our team include pricing, online advertising, uplift and long term value modeling, and general causal inference.

 

ABOUT THE JOB

 

  • You will help design and build end-to-end machine learning solutions
  • You will be working in small and cross-functional product teams, with great opportunities for growth and ownership of projects
  • You will be an active member of an internal community, including economists, data scientists, operations research scientists and machine learning engineers, sharing learnings, best practices and research across many domains
  • You will develop high impact solutions to support Instacart's ambitious growth plans
  • You will work closely with engineers, product managers, other teams, and both internal and external stakeholders, owning a large part of the process from problem understanding to recommending a solution and testing it in controlled experiments

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Graduate-level research experience on data-intense problems or 1+ years of industry experience in machine learning or economics-focused roles.
  • A blend of economic theory, applied econometrics, and business skills that let you jump into a fast-paced environment and contribute from day one.
  • Expertise in causal inference with observational and experimental data.
  • Strong engineering skills with expertise in R or Python and fluency in data manipulation (SQL, Pandas) and machine learning (scikit-learn, XGBoost, Keras/Tensorflow) tools.
  • An ability to identify and prioritize high-impact problems and deliver solutions that provide reasonable trade-offs between urgency and quality.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally based on job requirements
  • Self-motivation and a strong sense of ownership

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • PhD in Economics with focus on data-intense problems or 3-5 years of industry experience in machine learning or economics-focused roles.

This is a general posting for multiple Sr. Machine Learning roles open across our 4-sided marketplace. You’ll get the chance to learn about the problems the different ML teams solve as you go through the process. Towards the end of your process, we’ll do a team-matching exercise to determine which of the open roles/teams you’ll join. You can find a blurb on each team at the bottom of this page.

Ads Marketplace: 

The Ads Marketplace team is responsible for the systems and algorithms for showing the right ad to the right user at the right time to balance user value, advertiser value, and instacart revenue. The team optimizes a multi-sided marketplace to ensure customers see ads that help them try new products/brands, advertisers get their products in front of appropriate users for a good return on investment, and instacart generates the deserving revenue as well. The team tackles hard problems in a variety of spaces, such as ranking, pricing, personalization, UX as well as foundational problems executing on a high throughput system with dynamic data. You'll develop and enhance Instacart's ads systems together with senior members of product & software engineering. You will use machine learning to devise and refine solutions throughout the ads auction such as ads selection, ranking, and pricing for all of Instacart’s consumer facing pages such as: search, storefront, aisle, pre and post checkout experiences, among many others.
