Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Research Scientist with a data-centric mindset to join our applied research and innovation team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machine learning, deep learning, operationalization of AI/ML and process automation.

You will be responsible for analyzing data, researching the most appropriate techniques, and the development, testing, support and delivery of proof of concepts to resolve real-world and large-scale challenging problems.

Job Responsibilities
Develop and apply machine learning innovations with minimal technical supervision. Understand the requirements from stakeholders and be able to communicate results and conclusions in a way that is accurate, clear and winsome. Perform feasibility studies and analyse data to determine the most appropriate solution. Work on many different data challenges, always ensuring a combination of simplicity, scalability, reproducibility and maintainability within the ML solutions and source code. Both data and software must be developed and maintained with high-quality standards and minimal defects. Collaborate with other technical fellows on the integration and deployment of ML solutions. To work as a member of a team, encouraging team building, motivation and cultivating effective team relations.
 

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or an equivalent numerate discipline
  • Demonstrated senior experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning & other AI fields
  • Experience working with large datasets, production-grade code & operationalization of ML solutions
  • EDA analysis & practical hands-on experience with datasets, ML models (Pytorch or Tensorflow) & evaluations
  • Able to understand scientific papers & develop the idea into executable code
  • Analytical mindset, problem solving & logical thinking capabilities
  • Proactive attitude, constructive, intellectual curiosity & persistence to find answers to   questions
  • A high level of interpersonal & communication skills in English & strong ability to meet deadlines
  • Python, Pytorch, Git, pandas, dask, polars, sklearn, huggingface, docker, databricks

Desired Skills

  • Masters degree &/or specialization courses in AI/ML. PhD in science is an added value
  • Experience in MLOPs (MLFlow, Prefect) & deployment of AI/ML solutions to the cloud (Azure preferred)
  • Understanding & practice of LLMs & Generative AI (prompt engineering, RAG).
  • Experience with Robotic Process Automation, Time Series Forecasting & Predictive modeling
  • A practical grasp of databases (SQL, ElasticSearch, Pinecone, Faiss)

About our Machine Learning Team:

At Monzo, Machine Learning Scientists have ownership across the entire ML lifecycle, from from formulating ML problems to deploying models and monitoring their impact on key product and business metrics. 

Our Machine Learning Scientists collaborate in cross-functional squads across Data, Engineering, Product, and Risk, tackling a broad range of issues including fraud detection and prevention, transaction monitoring for various suspicious activities, customer risk assessment, and operational tooling.

What you’ll be working on:

As a Senior Lead ML Scientist, you’ll be the one of the most senior Individual Contributor (IC) Machine Learning Scientist! This will give you a real opportunity to lead us into an exciting new phase of fraud and financial crime prevention, utilising billions of rows of data and the learnings from your previous successes in designing and building advanced Machine Learning based systems for topics like personalisation, demand forecasting, workforce management, detection systems.

We’re talking about Deep Learning, Graph neural networks, transformers – you’ll have space to design the architecture that will help us take our real time systems to the next level.

 

Your day-to-day

As our most senior technical IC, you’ll be providing key technical leadership and shipping highly impactful ML-based solutions. You’ll be empowered to work across the collective identifying the most impactful areas and leading solution development.

You’ll work with our mission-oriented cross functional product squads, collaborating closely with product managers, data scientists, backend engineers and designers in an agile environment.

You’ll be expected to use your technical expertise to advise senior business stakeholders and help to set and advance our strategic direction across multiple squads.

You’ll also be a technical leader within the Machine Learning discipline, helping to steer technical work and drive up standards.

This will involve:

  • Working with stakeholders across the organisation to identify and scope out the most impactful opportunities to tackle product challenges with Machine Learning.
  • Bringing the learnings from your previous successes in designing and building advanced Machine Learning systems to lead advancements in our product development capabilities, for example utilising deep learning, graph-based, and sequence-based architectures.
  • Providing technical leadership to drive up levels of technical expertise and best practice across the Machine Learning discipline, leading by example and mentoring others.
  • Working closely with our MLOps team to steer the ongoing development of tools to enable rapid iteration of models and optimisations of the full ML model lifecycle.

About our Machine Learning FinCrime Team:

Our Financial Crime Data team consists of over 25 people across 4 data specialisms: Analytics Engineers, Data Analysts, Machine Learning Scientists and Data Scientists. As a Lead Machine Learning Scientist, you’ll be working in a fast moving environment, building and iterating on our financial crime defensive capabilities to ensure we keep Monzo and our customers safe. 

Our financial crime team has a large impact on Monzo’s bottom line as fraud and scams are usually some of the largest cost line items in a bank's P&L. We have a major influence on the overall customer experience and it’s our duty to keep our customers safe. The work we do results in directly measurable customer or company benefit, which is incredibly satisfying.

Our Machine Learning Scientists work on a range of problems within the different financial crime areas ranging from fraud detection and prevention, transaction monitoring for different types of suspicious activity through to customer risk assessment and operational tooling.

What you’ll be working on: 

A Lead Machine Learning Scientist at Monzo is a technical Individual Contributor (IC) leadership position. As a technical Machine Learning expert, working with billions of rows of data stored on a modern cloud native data platform, we’ll be expecting you to leverage your deep experience of developing and deploying advanced Machine Learning models to: 

  • Automatically and accurately detect suspicious user behaviours while minimising impact to genuine customers and operational costs
  • Adapt quickly and appropriately to changing fraud and financial crime trends, ensuring our detection systems remain performant through time.

Total Rewards 

Individual compensation packages are based on a few different factors unique to each candidate, including primary work location and an evaluation of a candidate’s skills, experience, market demands, and internal equity.

Data engineers make disparate data centrally available to Grammarly’s team members while ensuring query efficiency and efficacy. In this role you will:
  • Security Policy Implementation: Implement and enforce security policy requirements, conduct risk assessments, and conduct vulnerability testing. 
  • Security Engineering & Assurance: The Security Engineering & Assurance role involves conducting design and architecture reviews, threat modeling, secure code reviews, and cryptographic reviews to ensure robust security measures. Additionally, the position supports the open source ecosystem, engages in platform security engineering, and augments internal security engineering efforts. The role also includes research and development activities, particularly in compilers and binary translation research, to advance security technologies and practices.  
  • Technical Expertise: Provide technical direction to engineering teams on various security areas, including network security, platform security, authentication/authorization systems, application security, and security frameworks. 
  • Engineering Initiatives: Take leadership of security engineering initiatives for production and corporate infrastructure. 
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as an information security engineering subject matter expert, analyze attacks on customer applications from internal and external sources, proposing mitigations and fixes. 
  • Incident Management: Manage security vulnerability resolution according to company policies. This requires immediate response and working with affected teams to investigate and mitigate/remediate the vulnerabilities. Clear communication skills are critical. 
  • Real-Time Response: Ensure timely and effective responses to security incidents. This involves coordinating with incident response teams, analyzing threat data, and implementing mitigation measures. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about emerging threats and lead changes to security processes accordingly. Regularly assess and propose changes, that lead to improving the effectiveness of security operations.  
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other internal and customer security professionals, including network engineers, system administrators, and threat analysts.  
Your background:
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent industry experience in Software Engineering, Information Security, or related fields.  
  • Business Application security patterns
  • Choosing and applying Cryptography for confidentiality, integrity, and availability
  • Software Security engineering best practices
  • Authentication, authorization, and network security protocols
  • Linux OS system security features and best practices
  • Windows OS system security features and best practices 
  • Knowledge of secure software development practices across distributed, container, and private/public cloud computing environments  
  • Familiarity with network security devices, and security software product solutions.  
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning practices on creating the standards against which ML (and AI) projects using Large Language Models & RAG can be reviewed, and creating tools and techniques that help researchers assure the safety and security of the systems.  
  • 7+ years of experience with security operations systems (e.g., IDS, SIEM, anti-virus log collection systems).  
  • Certifications: Industry certifications like CISSP, CISA, CEH, or GSEC are desirable.

About the Role:

Gusto is seeking a Senior Engineering Leader to drive and execute the cross-functional strategy for our User-Facing Reporting and Analytics team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing user reporting, analytics, and providing users with the data they need in the format they require across the platform.

About the Team:

This team plays a critical role in ensuring the ease of use, efficiency and quality of data, reports rendered to meet customer needs. Their primary focus is on designing, implementing, and maintaining a robust reporting platform.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Lead Gusto’s Reporting engineering team, including the recruitment, hiring, and empowerment of a world-class team
  • In this position, you will be responsible for building scalable user facing reports and dashboard platform while  maintaining our data infrastructure, ensuring data quality, integrity, and accuracy
  • You will work cross-functionally with engineering, product, design, and stakeholder teams to lead various initiatives to advance our data and reporting solutions
  • You will leverage our data to identify key insights and create operational efficiencies, as well as produce accurate and meaningful analysis to drive business decisions
  • Build, develop, and maintain data models, automated reports, and dashboards using BI/Dashboarding tools such as PowerBI, ServiceNow, Tableau, and Salesforce
  • Meet with stakeholders from business and engineering to understand OKR requirements and convert them into analytical solutions
  • Analyze datasets to discover meaningful patterns, trends, and relationships to improve operational and productivity across our organization
  • Refine, enhance, and automate processes and reports by managing tables/views and data pipelines
  • Responsible for driving the development of product and core platform in a fast paced, start-up environment
  • Providing technical leadership in defining the product and platform solutions
  • Understand customer pain points, devise solutions, and then iterate through prototyping and frequent, successful product launches.
  • Work cross functionally with design leadership and product management leadership to build and drive Gusto’s access and workflow product vision and strategy
  • Empowering a team of senior engineers, operating in architects capacity and also engineering people empowerers (managers, creating alignment, clarity, high morale, driving quick but informed decision making, and helping them get unblocked

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • 5+ years of managing highly distributed engineering teams, and at least 2 years leading other engineering managers 
  • 6+ years of experience working with analytical tools and languages such as SQL,PowerBI/Tableau, Suplari, Coupa Analytics or Databricks
  • Experience with ELT data modeling and building analytical narratives using data visualizations
  • Experience with MLOps tooling such as KubeFlow, AWS Sagemaker, MLFlow, or other ML Ops tools
  • Experience in scaling engineering organizations with a focus on individual and team development
  • Ability to balance business needs, development for multiple product lines, and shipping high quality solutions
  • Experience in highly cross-functional environments for highly complex products preferred
  • Strong technical acumen with the ability to understand and debate tradeoffs and approaches to building scalable architecture and data models A high standard, systems-first approach, and strong point of view for the user experience informed by customer empathy, research, data, and customer support insights
  • Strong product opinions, including the ability to tell a story about where we’re going that is clear and inspiring, and work with teams to map dependencies, risks, and tradeoffs to increase velocity and make the vision real
  • Sharp skills as a builder — even as you’ve become a strategic leader, you are fundamentally a builder who can jump into problem solving with team members when they need the support

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $191,000-$237,000 in Denver, $208,000-$258,000 in most remote locations, and $225,000-$279,000 for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 daysper week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
