As our Backend Developer & QA, you’ll have a unique role that blends backend development with quality assurance. You'll build reliable systems using Python, Django, and Postgres while also ensuring everything runs like clockwork through rigorous testing. A Typical Day in the Life Might Look Like:

  • 40%: Developing new backend features in Django and Python to power our fulfillment platform.
  • 20%: Writing and optimizing SQL queries and database structures in Postgres.
  • 15%: Developing manual and automated test plans (because we’re serious about catching those bugs!).
  • 10%: Debugging backend issues and squashing bugs like a champ.
  • 10%: Collaborating with the product team to gather requirements and translate them into dev and QA tasks.
  • 5%: Participating in stand-ups to discuss progress and brainstorm solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain backend systems using Django, Python, and Postgres to support fulfillment workflows.
  • Develop and execute manual and automated test plans to ensure backend features meet quality standards.
  • Create and maintain APIs to integrate third-party services.
  • Use Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) methodologies to align testing with business requirements.
  • Identify, track, and resolve bugs and technical bottlenecks.
  • Optimize CI/CD pipelines and maintain version control using Git.
  • Document backend systems and QA workflows so future developers know exactly what’s going on.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3-5 years of experience in backend development with a focus on Python and Django.
  • Hands-on experience with Postgres databases (schema design, optimization, tuning).
  • Strong QA skills, including experience with Selenium, PyTest, or Behave for automated testing.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and integrating QA workflows.
  • Problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot both backend and testing challenges efficiently.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, testers, and product managers.
  • Bonus points for:
    • Experience building fulfillment systems or SaaS platforms.
    • Familiarity with Agile development practices and tools like Jira or Trello.
    • Expertise in BDD frameworks within Django’s ecosystem.

Education:

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred - but if you’ve got the skills and experience, we’re flexible.

Responsibilities

We're hiring engineers to join the Payroll Experiences team and work on systems that empower customer-facing products and develop features that help define the customer journey at Gusto. Our team's main goal is to keep our customers happy and deliver a consistently great experience for running payroll for their employees.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Build and maintain a system of reusable UI components and documentation that empowers all of Gusto’s payroll experiences including React.js, Typescript, Javascript, CSS, and HTML.
  • Develop tools to ensure that the quality, performance, and accessibility of Gusto’s reusable components continuously improve.
  • Collaborate across teams in building accessible, modular, performant frontend experiences.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of technical experience in a frontend engineering (or) a full stack engineering role.
  • Highly proficient in front-end Java script technologies, preferably React.js or Typescript.
  • Experience in building backend APIs is an added advantage but not mandatory.
  • Experience cross-functional collaboration with Design and/or other non-technical teams.

Our team is a group of folks whose primary goal is to build user experience in our flagship Cloud product, which is used by Gusto’s Customers to run the payroll for their employees and contractors. We also build and maintain APIs for some of our team-specific requirements.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 daysper week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

Sponsored products is our flagship search advertising product, and accounts for a meaningful portion of our advertising business today. We are looking for a Product Manager who can do it all, from leveraging strong design intuition to innovate on new consumer experiences to drive better engagement with sponsored products, to strong systems thinking and technical chops to comfortably lead improvements around auction dynamics and marketplace inventory to sustainably grow revenue. In this role, you will sit at the intersection of balancing and maximizing ecosystem value across instacart ads revenue, advertiser value, and consumer engagement.

 

About the Team

  • You will be working with a talented team of frontend and ML/backend Engineers, Data Scientists, and Sales / Product Marketers to identify, incubate, and launch products.
  • You will also closely partner with consumer Product Managers across search, storefront, checkout, and more and more to thoughtfully design, launch, and scale advertising solutions across the shopping journey.

About the Job 

  • You will work with designers to innovate on the next frontier on Sponsored Products formats, user experience improvements, and new use cases to improve engagement, all while maintaining a high degree of consistency with the current organic experience.
  • You will partner with highly technical ML engineers to innovate across highly technical areas, from building prediction models to identify what ads are most relevant to users in real-time based on their intent, behavior, and contextual signals, to designing the right auction mechanisms to ensure relevance for customers, healthy competition, and efficient allocation of ads, and building predictive pricing algorithms to better optimize across advertiser value and advertising revenue.
  • You will work with cross functional partners across sales, insights, and business operations to identify and grow underpenetrated parts of the sponsored products business.

You and your team will be responsible for lifting the product to the next level of scalability and functionality.

The team you’ll be a part of

You will join one of our most important tribes and lead one of the teams there. The Tribe currently consists of two teams with a total of 11 dedicated people. We need your help to find smart engineers to grow the new team to around 4-6 people. You will work closely with two existing teams working in a distributed and international setup, as well as the Director of tribe who will also be your direct leader.

The team develops and maintains, among other things, the customer and translator portal, the workflow orchestration engine, an internal API and much more. We moved the product to the cloud and want to move to API first and there’s a huge roadmap packed with great product ideas that will keep us busy for the years to come. Our team handles both the Frontend (written in JavaScript and Typescript) and several backend micro-services including the data persistence layer (created using .NET 5 and running on Kubernetes clusters in Azure).

You’ll report to our Director of engineering, and you’ll work closely with our Director of Technology and two other Team Leads within the Tribe.
