Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Battery Storage Engineer focused on operations and performance to manage, monitor, and optimize battery energy storage systems (BESS). In this role, you will ensure that our storage assets operate at peak performance and efficiency, working closely with cross-functional teams to analyze system data, troubleshoot issues, and maximize asset reliability. The ideal candidate will have expertise in battery storage technology, data analysis, and a keen eye for operational excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Operations Management
    • Monitor KPIs, state of charge (SoC), depth of discharge (DoD), and temperature profiles to maintain optimal operation and minimize degradation.
    • Help develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety protocols for battery systems.
  • Performance Optimization
    • Conduct performance analysis and degradation studies to identify and address factors impacting battery health and efficiency.
    • Collaborate with software and controls engineers to refine energy management algorithms and control strategies for maximum system efficiency.
    • Develop and implement predictive maintenance strategies using data analytics to preemptively address potential issues.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting
    • Generate detailed performance and incident reports, recommending adjustments or improvements to support long-term system resilience.
    • Track and report on energy throughput, round-trip efficiency, and degradation rates, providing insights to guide asset management decisions.
  • Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
    • Work closely with engineering, project management, and field teams to implement solutions and improvements that enhance BESS performance.
    • Stay updated on the latest advancements in battery technology, energy management, and predictive maintenance to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Provide technical training and support to field teams, sharing insights and best practices for battery operations and maintenance.

Qualifications

To succeed as a Battery Storage Engineer at Apex Clean Energy, you’ll need to excel within the following criteria:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years in battery storage engineering, operations, or asset management. Experience in utility-scale or commercial BESS operations is preferred.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of battery chemistry, cell-level degradation mechanisms, and energy management systems (EMS).
    • Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB) and experience with SCADA systems and monitoring platforms.
    • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices for BESS operations and safety (e.g., IEEE, IEC).
  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or other industry-relevant certification is a plus.

Apex Clean Energy is hiring a Remote Senior Environmental Permitting Manager

Job Description

Apex is seeking a Senior Environmental Permitting Manager with a focus on state and federal aquatic resources permitting experience to join our environmental permitting team and develop successful renewable energy projects. This position will support our national portfolio of utility scale wind and solar projects and report to the Vice President of Environmental.

As a Senior Environmental Permitting Manager, you will oversee and manage all required environmental compliance specific to local, state, and federal laws, statutes, and regulations for renewable energy projects across the country, with a focus on solar energy projects in the eastern U.S.  In this position, you will review, revise, complete and maintain environmental reports, lead agency coordination, direct and manage the work of niche and specialty consultants, and represent Apex before the local, state, and federal agencies, and public groups, when needed. Additionally, this position will inform near-term high priority project decisions around permitting compliance and risk with regards to the Clean Water Act and its state counterparts, as well as lead the management of aquatic resources permit applications and mitigation.  

Our ideal candidate is an action-oriented problem solver and hard-working team player who can provide direction on overall environmental permitting requirements and resolve complex permitting issues. In addition, this candidate would exhibit leadership qualities to provide aquatic resource regulatory compliance and risk strategies for the entire portfolio, in addition to near-term, high priority projects. This position requires excellent communication and writing skills as well as the ability to balance priorities and shift needs on the go. A passion for renewable energy is a must.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert concerning assessment of impacts to aquatic resources, but also have working knowledge of other sensitive resources such as birds, bats, vegetation communities, cultural resources, and associated permit and legal compliance risk assessments and strategies
  • Provide day to day direction and management and utilize judgement to resolve complex permitting issues on Projects, including direct oversight on CWA, but also ESA, BGEPA, NHPA permitting and NEPA review requirements, where necessary
  • Oversee and manage environmental compliance and permit strategy for relevant local, state, and federal natural resource laws, statutes and regulations, especially with regards to aquatic resources, for near-term high priority renewable energy Projects in various stages of development
  • Direct and manage work of niche and specialty consultants including participating in the selection process, scopes of work, schedules, and budgets
  • Review, revise, complete, and maintain records of all environmental reports and GIS data and shapefiles
  • Ensure completion of permit applications and required reports, licensing and notifications in accordance with local, state and federal laws, statutes and regulations
  • Represent Apex before the local, state, and federal agencies, and public groups, when needed
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key allies, stakeholders and regulators

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Environmental Science/Studies, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Management, Environmental Law, or related fields; Master’s degree is preferred
  • 10+ years of demonstrable professional working knowledge of regulations, ordinances, and acts relevant to aquatic resources and renewable energy development and construction
    • Proven success obtaining Clean Water Act Nationwide and Individual Permits, including corresponding NEPA documents, and Local and State wetland permits; experience with multiple types of projects and in several states is preferred
    • Previous experience providing guidance and compliance support and expertise to construction teams is a plus
  • Experience performing wetland and stream delineations as well as rare, sensitive, threatened, and endangered species surveys specific to wetlands, streams, and corresponding habitats
  • Experience with NHPA/SHPO and ESA permit processes; BGEPA permitting is a plus
